Microsporidia: a promising vector control tool for residual malaria transmission

نویسندگان

چکیده

Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) have resulted in a major decrease malaria transmission. However, it has become apparent that can be effectively transmitted despite high coverage of LLINs/IRS. Residual transmission occur due to Plasmodium -carrying Anopheles mosquitoes are insecticide resistant feeding resting behavior reduces their chance encountering the currently deployed control tools. is likely most significant hurdle achieving goal eradication research development towards new tools strategies therefore critical. One promising involves biological agents part mosquito microbiome influence ability transmit Plasmodium. These differ from previously used for vector primary effect on vectoral capacity rather than longevity fitness (which may or not affected). An example this type agent Microsporidia MB , which was identified field collected arabiensis caused complete inhibition falciparum without effecting host. belongs unique group rapidly adapting evolving intracellular parasites symbionts called microsporidia. In review we discuss general biology microsporidians inherent characteristics make some them particularly suitable control. We then priorities developing blocking strategy leading microsporidian candidate

Mapping residual transmission for malaria elimination

Eliminating malaria from a defined region involves draining the endemic parasite reservoir and minimizing local malaria transmission around imported malaria infections . In the last phases of malaria elimination, as universal interventions reap diminishing marginal returns, national resources must become increasingly devoted to identifying where residual transmission is occurring. The needs for...

Adult vector control, mosquito ecology and malaria transmission

BACKGROUND Standard advice regarding vector control is to prefer interventions that reduce the lifespan of adult mosquitoes. The basis for this advice is a decades-old sensitivity analysis of 'vectorial capacity', a concept relevant for most malaria transmission models and based solely on adult mosquito population dynamics. Recent advances in micro-simulation models offer an opportunity to expa...

Residual Transmission of Malaria: An Old Issue for New Approaches

Malaria is one of the most serious vector-borne diseases, affecting millions of people mainly in the tropics. Recently, a substantial decline in malaria incidence has been observed all over the world. Vector control is one of the key elements in achieving this world-wide malaria decline, with scaling up of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) and the expansion of Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) progr...

House-scale evaluation of bifenthrin indoor residual spraying for malaria vector control in India.

In an area of India where the main rural malaria vector, Anopheles culicifacies Giles, has developed triple resistance to DDT, HCH, and malathion sprayed indoors in antimalaria program, bifenthrin (10% wettable powder) was evaluated in a randomized house-scale trial between July 1999 and March 2000. Entomological impact of four serial doses of bifenthrin (25, 50, 100, and 200 mg/m2) sprayed in ...
